PPCA was commissioned by ATH to provide planning advice for a proposed extension to an opencast coal mine. PPCA worked with lead consultants Wardell Armstrong and prepared a robust planning policy chapter to form the policy backbone of the Environmental Statement. The planning policy context was complex for this application because:
- the extension is in part on land identified within the Preferred Area of Search for coal and in part outwith it;
- the majority of the site is designated as a Special Protection Area and Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The planning policy chapter was specifically written to:
- pull together the raft of government planning policy and guidance and the development plan; and
- tie the wide ranging environmental and amenity issues assessed in the Environmental Statement to its planning policy context.
The application has now been granted full planning permission.
